It’s a tragic fact that 1-in-4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
And Oklahoma has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the nation.
Domestic violence is defined as, “violent confrontation between family or household members involving physical harm, sexual assault or fear of physical harm.”
Family or household members could include spouses, former spouses, related adults, current or past dating relationship partners, or those with a biological or legal parent-child relationship.
The abuser uses intimidation, threats, psychological abuse and isolation to control the other person. Violence may or may not occur often, but the threat of violence often keeps victims living in a hidden state of fear.
Financial Abuse is Domestic Abuse
One the primary forms of control exercised over victims is financial abuse, where the batterer makes the victim feel like they “can’t leave” because they won’t be able to support themselves financially.
Financial abuse has been called an invisible weapon that traps victims in abusive relationships.
When women make the courageous move to leave, they often escape a dangerous situation with nothing more than the clothes on their back.
How You Can Help
There are some great organizations that help survivors of domestic violence walk free from their abusers by providing financial education, resources and empowerment. Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS) right here in Tulsa is an organization that helps.
This week, our Allstate agency – in association with Purple Purse and DVIS – is collecting donations that will be used to help survivors of domestic abuse escape their abusive environments.
We invite you to join the cause and help these victims by providing some practical items. These are every day items that help people who take shelter with DVIS get back on their feet with basic necessities.
